Check their licence

Every insurance broker selling insurance in Kenya must be licensed by the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA). Confirm the current licence on the IRA website before paying any premium.

Questions to ask

• What exactly is covered, and what is excluded?
• What is the excess and any waiting period?
• How are claims made, and how long do they take?
• Can I pay in instalments or via M-Pesa?

Documents to prepare

Have your national ID or passport and KRA PIN ready. Motor cover also needs the logbook; business cover may need a registration certificate and asset list.

After you buy

Ask for your policy document and receipt in writing. If a claim dispute cannot be settled with the provider, you can complain to the IRA Consumer Protection Department.
